"A Peony for My Thoughts", 2009

My thoughts today? The D-Day Landings and my visit, 2 summers ago, to the American Cemetery in Normandy, France. A vist, I might add, that I'll never forget ; very moving indeed ( see my impressions of that trip here: Memorial Day, 2008- Sketch and Photos from Normandy ). I know this could have/should have been a drawing of a poppy (floral symbol of rememberance), but the poppies in my garden have yet to really bloom - so, no poppy models to bring inside, yet.
However, my peony bush really came forth this year with beautiful deep pink blossoms and the plant is only 2 years old. The flowers smell divine as well. I cut a few before the rains came and brought them inside to draw. Alas, the rains did come and they're all gone now; beautiful deep pink petals all over the ground ... pity. I'm going to buy a sister plant for this one, so I can have more next year.
Oh, there's also the "Drawing Day-2009" initiative today. I normally do not make a habit of joining in such events and haven't really made the effort here for that event, but perhaps it's a coincidence that I drew the peony today ... who knows?! I do enjoy working in pen & ink and particulary doing cross-hatching work. I really enjoy the graphic nature of the results - takes me back to my "art student days" and all those etching classes ... long, long ago.
