These are, most likely, going to be the only eggs I'm coloring for Easter! Not that I don't like coloring eggs, (I do) - I just don't have the time this year.

But, I do have some lovely petite tulips currently growing in my garden. :o) ...

Tulipa humilis, 'Persian Pearl'.
March 2012 ~ Utrecht, Netherlands

Tulipa humilis Persian Pearl is a miniature charmer! It easily naturalizes, is an annual you don't have to dig up after the blooming season, flowers early and grows to approx. 15cm (6") in height. They look best planted in groups of, at least, 15-20 bulbs ... in my opinion.

Although the weird, late, hard freeze we had this winter stunted many of my tulips, a lot of these little Persian Pearls appear to have weathered the severe conditions pretty well. I love seeing their bright magenta petals amongst all the greens. :o)

Snake's Head Fritillaria (Kievitsbloem) in colored pencil - or - Will I see it bloom this year?

Many years ago, (before I started blogging), this amazing little plant, the Snake's Head Fritillaria (Fritillaria meleagris), bloomed abundantly in my garden here in Holland - but I haven't seen it bloom again in a very long time.

It certainly seems "happy" where it is right now, with lots of healthy green showing. Maybe it's too healthy?
I don't know ...

So I wonder, will it bloom this year???

A Dutch Tradition:
In dutch, a Snake's Head Fritillaria is known as a Kievitsbloem. A Kievit (Vanellus vanellus) is a Northern European migratory bird, that nests in tall grasses in fields or marshlands. The birds' eggs are brownish in color and spotted, resembling the Fritillaria bloom - hence the Dutch name of the flower/plant! In english, a Kievit bird is a called a Northern Lapwing (or Peewit, Green Polver, or simply Lapwing).

In the Netherlands, particularly in the province of Friesland, it's a competitive tradition to be the first to find the Kievit's egg in early Spring - normally from March 1 to April 9. However, since the bird is on the European Union's protected list and it is now forbidden to harvest the eggs in most of Europe, a special dispensation was granted to Friesland to be able to coninue the Eerst Ei (first egg) tradition, but only during the period between March 1 to April 9. Participants are only allowed to harvest up to 15 eggs and the eggs must be authenticated by the Nature Network in Vaassen. So, this centuries old tradition still continues.
In 2012, the first  Kievit's egg (kievitsei) was found on March 10th, in the village of  Oudehaske  in Friesland (the Wikipedia article is in dutch - but there is a map pictured. :o)) ) .

A Rose of a Different Color - red, yellow, blue + white

"Rose of a Different Color"
Colored pencils on Stonehenge paper  ~  5.5" x 3.5"
March, 2012

Here in the Netherlands, the beginning days of March have been the usual grey and misty, kind of gloomy, days ... so I needed some color. I changed this rose a bit ... ok, a lot! It's based on a very small, pale pink, rose, but now it's my rose of a different color. :o)

This piece was done using only the 3 standard primary colors: red, yellow, blue and white pencils (no black, no green, no purple, no orange) - mixing them on the paper (lots of layering) to get the various hues, tints and shades you see.

For this piece I used:
Prismacolor and Faber-Castell regular colored pencils
Stonehenge paper

For those interested in another piece (an apple) that I did using the same technique, (only Prismacolor pencils), see this link:

Blog Birthday #6 !

"And a Cherry On Top"
Colored pencils on Dura-lar ~ size approx. 7"h  x 5"w
March 1, 2012 ~ Utrecht, Netherlands

OMG, today I’ve been blogging for six years! 6!! In blog years, that's a heck of a long time. In cat years, it's even longer, like 42 years or something. Oi! :o))

This was my first blog post Geen Idee! (No Idea!) , and I really had no idea what I was doing (err, what "we" were doing).

"Thank you" to my readers, visitors and subscribers that have stuck with me and my cat(s) through the years ; your comments are always appreciated. It only took me 3 years to finish the drawing above (I am so slow), which is one reason I'm not an "everyday" blogger - saves you from having to comment!! *chuckle* lol

For the cupcake drawing I used:
  • Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils (not aquarelle)
  • Grafix Dura-Lar ~ acetate/drafting film/mylar (matte surface, med. weight)
  • Plain white paper used for the backing only
So, here's to more artwork, pics, adventures and  at least another year of blogging!

tot de volgende keer (until next time),
Judy, and sometimes Sacha
