Digital Drawing, while it Snows!

It's seriously cold outside and seriously snowing here in Holland, so I'm staying inside and playing with an online digital drawing program by Mr.doob : Harmony - online digital drawing tool

I don't have a tablet or iPad, so this is a nice 'playful' digital alternative for days when the weather is too challenging for me! Drawing with only the mouse was also challenging, but in a good way. :D

Somewhere I do have a Wacom 'thingy' (that's a highly technical term...ha ha ha), but I have to re-set it up on my desk, which I might do as I kind of enjoy the no mess, low cost and ease of drawing digitally... sometimes.

cheers,
Judy

Oliebollen for 2013!
watercolors & gouache on watercolor paper - size approx. 5" square
January 1, 2013 ~ Utrecht, Netherlands

I made oliebollen last night for New Year's Eve! It's been years since I've made them, but they came out surprisingly delicious. After I made them, I took a break and did the quick little watercolor painting above. There's probably a bit too much "powder sugar" on this oliebol, but I had fun spattering the white paint about. :o) Oliebollen (or literally, "oil balls" in English)  are a Dutch New Year's tradition.

Last year, I found this info about the possible origins of the oliebollen : a little snippet of the history of the Oliebol (singular form), according to Wikipedia:
"They are said to have been first eaten by Germanic tribes in the Netherlands during the Yule, the period between December 26 and January 6. The Germanic goddess Perchta, together with evil spirits, would fly through the mid-winter sky. To appease these spirits, food was offered, much of which contained deep-fried dough. It was said Perchta would try to cut open the bellies of all she came across, but because of the fat in the oliebollen, her sword would slide off the body of whoever ate them."

If you want to make your own Oliebollen, you can find recipes for them all over the web, from many different countries & cultures. Fried dough & sugar! ... lekker (delicious). :o))

Wishing you and yours a
Happy New Year!
Gelukkig Nieuwjaar!
2013

tot ziens,
Judy
